Take Heart Austin is proud to host this one-day educational event with one objective in mind – to improve the post resuscitation care of post cardiac arrest patients.  The day will feature nationally recognized researchers and leaders in the field of cardiac arrest resuscitation.  The conference will focus on caring for the cardiac arrest patient after return of pulses and until discharge and completion of rehabilitation.  Several of our speakers were also actively involved in the development of the 2010 American Heart Association Guidelines for CPR and Emergency Cardiovascular Care.  Since the conference will occur less than 2 weeks following the planned release of the Guidelines, speakers will be able to include in their presentations any applicable post resuscitation care Guidelines.  Considering the variety of healthcare professionals involved in the post resuscitation care of cardiac arrest patients, the conference’s target audience includes EMS providers, EMS System Medical Directors, Emergency Department Physicians and Nurses, Cardiac Catheterization Lab Staff, Cardiologists, Critical Care Physicians and Nurses, Critical Care Neurologists, Critical Care Respiratory Therapists, Rehabilitation Staff and all others who champion efforts to improve neurologically intact survival from sudden cardiac arrest.  Austin-area designated Resuscitation Centers are encouraged to spread the word within their hospitals to better prepare for future Resuscitation Center designation criteria.  All others are encouraged to spread the word to colleagues interested in learning more about Post Cardiac Arrest Resuscitation Care.

Conference registration is now open but is limited to the first 275 registrants.  To register for this conference, download a program and complete the brief registration form.  Email or fax the completed registration form as noted on the form.  Payment may be made by check, money order or on-line credit card payment.  For information on how to register for the conference, how to submit your registration payment and to download the Conference program, please go to the Take Heart Austin website at www.takeheartaustin.org

This program would not have been possible without the generous support of our sponsors.  You will have an opportunity to visit with each of them at the conference as well.  We are looking forward to hosting this outstanding program of speakers and topics and we look forward to seeing you and your colleagues on October 29.  If you need any further assistance or have questions, please call or email me or Heather Kearns, 512-978-0000, heather.kearns@ci.austin.tx.us.

Provider Health and Safety Advisory - Dengue Virus
Posted July 28, 2010

Please read - click here

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has issued a Health Advisory regarding an increase potential for cases of Dengue virus observed in returning travelers from areas in which there is increased Dengue virus transmission.  Dengue virus transmission has been increasing to epidemic levels in many parts of the tropics and subtropics. Travelers to these areas are at risk of acquiring dengue virus and developing dengue fever (DF) or the severe form of the disease, dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF). With an extensive dengue outbreak occurring in Puerto Rico and evidence of continued transmission in Key West, Florida, travel to certain domestic locations may also pose a risk for the traveler.

While we may not be requested to scenes specifically for Dengue Virus illnesses, we should remain alert and understand our role as important early sentinels in uncovering possible Dengue cases within our community.

Please ensure that the OMD Provider Health and Safety and CDC Health Advisories are distributed so all system providers are aware of the areas from which Dengue Virus may originate, review signs and symptoms of the two main manifestations of the disease and the clinical management of these patients, and the pertinent CDC recommendations.

Should you have any questions or require additional information, please do not hesitate to contact me.
